Bandages
You will have a small bandage covering your chin when you leave the operating room.

Amount of pain
Low to medium. Your physician will advice you to take analgesics every 6 or 8 hours; this will bring great relief to you.

Removal of the stitches
7 days after the surgery.

Bruises and swelling
The swelling may last two weeks. The bruises are very infrequent. Cold compresses are very useful during the first days. In one or two weeks more, your chin will have a completely normal appearance, but the definite results will be fully appreciated after two months.

Scars
If the incision was made inside the mouth, the scar will be completely invisible. If it was made under the chin, the resulting scar will be very small and it will be concealed by the natural fold of the area.

Recovery

• You will probably have to be on a liquid diet during the first day, and then you will pass on to a soft diet. If the implant was inserted through your mouth, it will be very important for you to take care of the hygiene of the wound until it heals to avoid the proliferation of bacteria inside the mouth. Do not eat any kind of meat unless it is well cooked, and do not take any kind of dairy foods. If you eat raw vegetables, wash them thoroughly. Wash your mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash.
• You may be able to return to your social activities or job a week after the surgery, if you do not mind being seen with the swelling. You will have to wait until the second or third week before doing any hard work or physical exercise.
• During the first days you will have to sleep with your head elevated so that the healing process will be free of complications.
• If you wish to apply make-up, you may be able to do it a day after the surgery.
• During the first weeks, the patients tend to suffer from depression. As with other facial surgeries, you may find it difficult to come to terms with your new look and you may even feel that you made a terrible mistake in deciding to have a surgery. But you shouldn't worry. Most of the people who today are happy and satisfied with the results of a surgery have also gone through that phase.

Possible risks and complications
It is very unlikely for chin implant surgery to present any complications when performed by a qualified surgeon. However, every surgical procedure, regardless of its triviality, has some risks and we should always think of them as a possibility.

• Asymmetry. Even though the surgeon marks very carefully the areas he is going to treat, there may be asymmetries.
• Adverse reactions to anesthesia.
• Infections, although they are very unusual if you take the right antibiotics.
• Displacement of the implant.
• Erosion of the chin bone due to friction with the implant. This may only happen after many years, but if it does, the implant must be removed.
